scubydo - 11/28/2006 6:15 PM Picked up a box of these from Holts among other things

These are made by Jose "Pepin" Garcia in his new factory in Nicaragua. I took a chance on buying these as I have been underwhelmed by cigars produced by him due to major constuction flaws on EVERY cigar I have smoked that was made by him. I loved the blend, but the construction problems combined with the price was a real disappointment and an effort of futility. The cigars made in Miami are reported as being produced by master rollers...maybe he meant laid off street pavers...LOL
Well,it looks like he found some good "help" out of the jungles of Nicaragua because these cigars are fantastic
These puro cigars feature a beautiful, oily corojo wrapper with a double Nic binder and Nic filler topped off with a perfect triple cap.I will preface by saying this is as close as to tasting like a high end, strong habanos except for missing the twang associated with cubans.
Pre-light draw was perfect,if not a little too easy but that was ok by me
(nothing worse than a tight/plugged cigar that won't draw
). The cigar was well packed with no soft spots or voids. Toasted the foot and we were off to the races! The burn was good and the ash a slight bit flakey but held on for an inch or so
(not that that really matters
).
This cigar is very young and reminds me of smoke a fresh strong cuban
(I find most cubans mild to medium in strength...but that is just me
). Good volumes of spicy full bodied smoke..maybe you would consider it a bit rough around the edges taste wise. After about an inch some complexity tries to break thru, but it is struggling to compete with the brute strength of this young cigar. I have smoke 2 so far fresh off the truck and both needed to be relite at the 2/3 mark, even though I was smoking it consistently...but that is the nature of corojo wrappers. I re-lite the cigar and it continued to burn perfectly
(burned straight start to finish
) till the nub
(a first for any Pepin made stick that I have smoked
).
After thoughts: This is a great cigar,a diamond in the rough that needs some age to become outstanding
(like any good cuban!
). This cigar IMHO will really blossom as time goes by. It is strong but balanced...I did not get nicotine hiccups like I do from some full bodied cigars, but when finished smoking I knew I smoked a good one...LOL
It will be hard for me to put this box to sleep because I do enjoy that fresh rolled taste of a strong cigar,so I plan on buying another box this week to put down to enjoy it when it has time to mature!
Prices range from $100 to $132 for a box of 25 with 5 Old Henry freebies thrown in from Holts in there catalog special
(great deals by the way on a bunch of stuff they are offering!
).
Go get em
